Alexandria was established in 332 B.C by Alexander the Great, a Greek King.
Our first stop was the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa - (meaning Mound of theShards.). It was the largest burial ground which dates back to the 2nd century.
Second stop was Pompey’s Pillar - One of the largest freestanding triumphal columns outside of Rome. It dates back to the 1st century and was originally part of a religious temple for the Patron God Serapis. Gradually Christianity became the dominant religion in Egypt, relegating adherents to the ancient traditions and pagan gods as irrelevant minorities. Around 391 A.D patriarch Theopolis, the leader of the Church of Alexandria, led a huge mob of Christians to the temple and it was destroyed.
